Spanish Games

Here we give you a brief idea of the three main Spanish games we show you in Ciudad Rodrigo. You will learn more about players, exact rules, playing areas etc. We offer more sports such as tug-a-war, the handkerchief or the key (la llave).

La petanca (The Petanque)

Although originating in France, the petanque has become popular in parts of Spain, especially in coastal areas.

Rules:

  • Players throw hollow metal balls (boules) as close as possible to a small wooden target ball called a cochonnet or jack.
  • Typically played on dirt or gravel surfaces.
  • Can be played one-on-one, in pairs, or in teams of three.

La Rana (The Frog)

La Rana is a traditional Spanish game of skill, particularly popular in the Castilla y León region.

Rules:

  • A wooden box with various holes, including a brass frog with an open mouth on top is the target of the game.
  • There are metal discs for throwing which have to enter at least one of the holes or the frog’s mouth. If the disc enters the mouth, the player wins top points every time he does so. The holes are worth less points.

La Calva

La calva is a throwing game originating from central Spain, particularly popular in Salamanca and Ávila

Setup:

  • A horn-shaped target (calva) wood is  set up at a distance.
  • Cylindrical metal or stone-made  pieces (cilindros) are thrown at la calva.
  • The number of players with more hits to la calva are the winners.
